Review

After 3 years of hard waiting we finally received a new cup of magic musical elixir for our tired and wounded souls from the best Italian gothic band Mandragora Scream! The new album "VOLTURNA" is the fourth one in the history of the band and it contains 15 absolutely new songs including two covers and one intro.

The intro 'Lui' opens the album with whispers of Morgan and a melody which reminds some themes of classical music. Also it contains some strange sounds which reminds the roar of a wounded ancient monster.
The first song on the album is 'I'm Goin' Alone'. Going with the raven into the magic world of MS' music you will wonder how much it has changed since your last visit. The sound of the band is very modern now; they use a lot of electronics samples and computer effects. The chorus contains only one phrase "I'm Goin' alone with you tonight" that Morgan and Terry repeat many-many times with different intonations. This song definitely has roots of industrial music.
'The Circus' is performed by Morgan with whispers and groans in her own unique style. Melody is very simple but catchy. In this song the violin is used in a combination with a modern electronic sound. This effect makes the sound very specific.
'Deceiver' begins with a conversion of two people through portable radio transmitter and it continues till the end. This song is performed only by Morgan.
The first single from "Volturna" is "Breaking Dawn". This song begins with the sound of a music box. Then Morgan reads a scary fairy-tale for bad children. The melody in chorus reminds "Crying Clouds" from the debut album.
'Killin' Game' is another industrial song. The sound is very fresh for MS, you have never heard anything like that from them before. This song reminds such bands as Deathstars.
'Blindness' is the first ballad on the album performed by Morgan. It's very a beautiful, sensitive and sad acoustic song. It is probably my favorite.
'Farewell' represents the duet between Morgan and Terry. A very beautiful act in the best traditions of "Madhouse" album!
'A Chance from Him' is a very specific song. It sounds like an old-school hard-rock song with whispers and growl of Morgan and the vampirish chorals on the background.
'The Calling From Isaiah' starts with mystical whispers of Morgan and then turns out to be... some kind of a modern BLACK METAL song with female vocals in the unique MS's style!
The next song is called 'Bang Bang' and it's a cover of the song written by Sonny Bono for his wife Cher. It's the second and the last ballad on the album. I should say it's a very atmospheric song that makes you relax.
'The Seagull's Creed' is another MS's song in a new modern sound style. You can hear the male vocals in this song that belong to (???)
'Fade To Grey' is a second cover song on the album originally performed Visage in the 80s. Now with the help of MS it sounds more modern and fresh.
'Nails' is a song with aggressive guitars and a risible Terry's vocal in the chorus who in all probability tries to simulate the guitar sound.
'Heartbound ever' is a kind of outro to the album, the last chapter of the journey into the world of MS music. Again it contains some elements of classical music, whispers of Morgan and voice of a very special guest - Spanish maestro Julio Alves Olivares Merino.

In conclusion I would like to notice some specific features of the new MS album that make 'Volturna' completely different from 'Madhouse' and all of the previous works. First of all it's the sound of the band that has changed a lot since the last studio album. Now Mandragora Scream is playing the modern gothic metal with a lot of electronic samples and computer effects and the dense guitar sound. The new album is a kind of experiment with electronic and industrial music. The only thing I can say: you have never heard anything like that from them before. Although all the innovations, MS' music doesn't loose the basic characteristics (gothic and vampire influence, extraordinary vocal performanced by Morgan Lacroix, beautiful melodies by Terry Horn) and 'Volturna' sounds in unique style of MS established on the previous works.
